FMC Australia is proud to have assisted the vision of the late
Harry Perkins, the driving force behind the formation of the
Western Australian Institute for Medical Research. He
believed that with out a high quality research environment
in Western Australia, it would be difficult to recruit and
retain the best doctors and, as a consequence, service
delivery to the community would inevitably suffer.
The “Vision for a Healthy Life” Campaign
successfully raised over $20 million which established the
Institute to conduct world class research promoting
collaborative research endeavours through the strength and
focus of one unified body.
Founded by the University of Western Australia and the
research foundations at Sir Charles Gairdner and Royal Perth
Hospitals, the Institute now provides the first
multi-disciplinary, multi-campus institute of its kind in
Australia.
WAIMR has also enjoyed growing commercial success,
contributing to much of the State Biotechnology sector
through the establishment of the spin off companies OzGene,
Dimerix and GenAid, as well as the filing of a number of
patents
Through its research and commercial activities, WAIMR has
grown in size considerably, creating over 200 highly skilled
jobs since inception in 1998 and due to its growing
reputation, WAIMR continues to reverse the Brian Drain of
Western Australia’s best scientific talent moving over east
and over seas.
“With the general structure of WAIMR defined, it was
essential that we had the funds to implement this exciting
initiative. Fundraising therefore became the most important
priority. We are indebted to many individuals, who gave so
freely of their time to assist WAIMR raise the funds
essential for success. I am also grateful to Fundraising
Management Consultants’ for keeping us “on task” in our
ambitious $20 million campaign.
